This leaflet has been designed to help your child achieve the most from their homework activities. Follow the handy hints below to help ensure that their homework is completed to the best of their ability.
Helping With Homework Activities.
Choose a suitable time and place, preferably quiet and comfortable with a desk or table to work at.
Let your child take the lead. They will learn more that way.
Make sure they have plenty of thinking time.
Share the activity when appropriate.
Sometimes children may be asked to visit the library or use the internet.
Remember to listen to how your child has been asked to complete their homework.
Reading with your child.
Read regularly with your child.
Read a variety of materials. Your child will have a school reading book but there are other materials to read such as newspapers, magazines and comics.
All children should be reading on a regular basis. 15 minutes before bedtime is a good way of relaxing.
Share a book with your child.
Talk about the cover, the words and pictures, what the story is about, what will happen next and encourage them to give reasons for their answers.
Handy Homework Hints.
Be enthusiastic and supportive. Ask questions related to the homework.
A little quality time is better than a long slog.
Be positive…praise your child’s efforts.
Resist the temptation to do the homework for them. A little note on the homework to alert the child’s teacher to any problems would be very helpful.
