Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

Happy New Year to everyone. It is difficult to believe that another year has passed and another year is beginning. When I told the children in Worship yesterday that I started teaching in the last century in the 1990’s they were amazed. Children don’t see the passing of time as much as we do. I do hope that you all had a restful break although I know some, like me, are glad that children are back and routines have commenced again.

Building work

The outside of the building has now been faced with the original stone and fits in very well with the existing building.

The children have had some say on floor colours and toilet cubicle colours and toilet floors have been laid. We are carpeting the corridor through to the hall also and this will be happening in the next few days.

Following an internal advert for Miss Holden’s maternity post I am pleased to announce that Mrs Avril Carr is the successful applicant and will be commencing her post after Easter. Mrs Carr is well known to parents and children and the transition will be a smooth one.

Mrs Mitchell will not be in school in the upcoming weeks due to personal reasons. She and her family are at the forefront of our thoughts and prayers. There has been some staff movements within school as a result.

Miss Natalie Bromley will soon be starting an apprenticeship with us and will be studying (while training and working in school) for her NVQ Level 3 teaching Assistant Course.

PE kits

PE lessons started today but some children did not have correct kit. Children should have in school at all times navy shorts or tracksuit bottoms, a white t-shirt, pumps and/or trainers. School jumpers can be worn when doing PE outside.

Please speak to a member of staff if you need PE kit as the PTA do have second hand uniform both PE and school uniform to sell.

Payment cards for our Water Park Residential have been sent home to all children whether or not a deposit has been paid. Some parents have paid a monthly amount as suggested on my initial letter and this has been reflected on their payment cards. Payments can be made at any time and for any amount. Please send in payment cards when sending in payments.

Gym Clubs and Music clubs will commence next week. Monies already paid for violin and guitar will have a week’s fees rolled over due to there being no lesson yesterday.

Barrow raiders Rugby

Several Barrow Raiders players will be joining us in school every Tuesday afternoon for the next few weeks to listen to readers. Teachers will be picking children who they feel will gain the most from being heard read by a positive male role model. I am also in discussion with the players to see if they would run an after school club on the Tuesday for any interested children. This will take the form of basic rugby skills. A separate letter will be sent home regarding this is the players agree.

Term dates

I don’t really want to start thinking about September 2017 but some schools are already thinking about start dates in September. It has been proposed and accepted by both Dowdales and UVHS that next September the County’s term dates are altered for the Autumn term. This has in turn had a knock on effect to the primary schools. The proposed changes are:

Monday    Friday   Monday 23 October –

4 September   15 December  Friday 27 October

Wednesday   Tuesday

6th September  19th December

Alternatively we could also opt for this option as some of the Dalton schools are doing.

Wednesday   Wednesday

6th September  20th December   end of year finish on Thursday 19th July

I would appreciate a response through Survey Monkey to indicate preferred choices. All data will then be collated next Friday. Please use the link below to access the survey.

I am awaiting a sample from Identity in Barrow in order to show you the proposed new uniform jumper and PE shirt from September.

Kind regards,

Sarah Powell
